Petrified Forest National Park – 2023
Traveling through the Petrified Forest was like an adventure on Tatooine in Star Wars. Just look at that landscape!!! You can see huge logs of petrified wood scattered throughout the park along with amazing geologic formations. The Petrified Forest is a part of The Painted Desert and is best known for Triassic Fossils. And with the Painted Desert, It’s like having two parks in one, an ecosystem over 200 million years old with plants and animals now represented in the surreal landscape of the Painted Desert. There’s such amazing history, archaeology, modern biology, geology, and paleontology. It’s definitely worth the visit and the entry fee.
On to the Painted Desert where the colors take your breath away. I didn’t make it back for sunset, but you can only imagine…. While you’re there, stop at the Painted Desert Inn. Opening in 1940 under the management of the Fred Harvey Company, which was famous in the Southwest for providing hospitality services to tourists and travelers on the Santa Fe Railroad. There was even a movie “The Harvey Girls” circa 1946 that chronicled the lives of the girls who worked for the Harvey Hotels. It is very much worth your time to visit this historic inn.
